Herpes & HPV
Herpes refers to a class of viral infections of a sexual and non-sexual nature. There are currently over 70 different types of herpes, which are caused by one or more herpes viruses.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a virus that is transmitted from skin-to-skin contact through sexual intercourse or other forms of skin-to-skin contact of the genitals. HPV is actually a group of more than 150 viruses associated with this condition. Each HPV virus in this large group is given a number that designates the type of HPV. HPV is also named for the genital warts (papillomas) that some types of HPV can cause.
Some other types of HPV can lead to cancer, especially cervical cancer. There are more than 40 types of HPV that can infect the genital areas of men and women.
HPV can also infect the mouth and throat and cause cancer of the oropharynx (the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils). This is called oropharyngeal cancer.
